Repositories - communicating the idea

« Back To JISC Repositories
There are feasible and worthwhile approaches which will improve the consistency with which repositories share metadata
nf
As part of our work to "examine the feasibility of approaches to improve the consistency with which repositories share material", we are looking at this in regard to 3 areas: metadata (this idea), the materials themselves and descriptions of repository policies (e.g. on IPR) [materials and policies appear as separate ideas].

Yes, promote good Atom/RSS feeds, and get rid of authn barriers to deep linking to metadata.

Still not convinced that we really know what kind of metadata we need to capture and share.

It would be nice if our repo-communication protocols provided for metadata correction. Aggregators like OAIster and NSDL do a lot of data-massaging, but that doesn't benefit source repos because the agg can't tell the source that its metadata was bad but can be fixed. In fact, OAI-PMH doesn't even let an agg say "your XML isn't well-formed and I won't take it until it is."
